PLANNING SUBMITTED FOR DRAKELOW PARK Uttoxeter-based planning and development specialists Hawksmoor has led a planning application to deliver a sustainable mixed-use scheme to Drakelow Park, a 110 hectares site of predominately brownfield land, near Burton on Trent on behalf of Roger Bullivant Ltd (RBL) and E.ON UK. Providing a comprehensive project management service to RBL and E.ON UK, Hawksmoor put together and co-ordinated the activities of a team of consultants to provide a range of expertise to drive the planning process. The proposed scheme will include up to 2,200 new homes including family housing and a retirement village. There will be an employment park of approximately 50,000 sq m of employment space which, it is hoped, will provide jobs for some of those who purchase houses within the development. Around 35 per cent of the site will be green spaces including parks, mature woodland, sports pitches and a woodland nature trail. In addition the scheme will deliver two mixed-use neighbourhood centres with space for local shops, a new primary school, small businesses and community space set around a village square. New and enhanced public transport initiatives, including a transport hub in each local centre with additional buses and real-time traffic information to drive public transport usage plays a key role in the scheme. Encouraging the use of new pedestrian and cycle routes into Burton upon Trent and Swadlincote is also central to the planning application. “We have been involved in the development of Drakelow Park for more than five years and over that time have taken into account a number of planning initiatives in its development strategy”, said Steve Fawcett, managing director at Hawksmoor. “In particular, this includes the Government’s aspiration to deliver three million new homes by 2020 and the draft Regional Spatial Strategies for the East and West Midlands, which include ambitious housing targets for the two local authorities, East Staffordshire Borough Council and South Derbyshire District Council. The planning application is a significant step forward and involved a lot of effort by all members of the team and we look forward with anticipation to the outcome.” Chris Chatfield from RBL added: “The Drakelow Park team has created a vibrant scheme which will create new jobs, deliver much-needed new family, retirement and affordable homes as well as facilities for local people.” The planning application has been submitted to South Derbyshire District Council and a planning decision is expected in the autumn of this year. |
